Position: Public Safety & Emergency Readiness

Thank You, Firefighters: Keeping Laguna Hills Ready for Wildfire

Thank you to the firefighters, deputies, and emergency workers who have been fighting the Norte Fire. My heart goes out to every neighbor who has been evacuated and every family that lost a home. On the City Council, I will keep wildfire readiness on the agenda and help every neighbor sign up for emergency alerts.

Standing with our neighbors

The Norte Fire has threatened homes in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. I am thinking of every family that has been evacuated, and every family that lost a home. Wildfire and extreme weather affect all of South Orange County, and we look out for each other. For the latest, see the official incident page.

To the firefighters, deputies, and emergency workers who answered the call: thank you. Laguna Hills is one of the 23 cities the Orange County Fire Authority serves, and we depend on those crews every day.

How Laguna Hills is doing its part

Laguna Hills already has good tools in place. Property owners clear dry vegetation near homes under an annual weed abatement program. The City maps wildfire evacuation zones and sends alerts through AlertOC. You can look up any address on the state's updated fire hazard map. Tools only help if neighbors use them, and that is where I want to help.

My commitments as your District 4 representative

  1. Keep readiness on the agenda. Ask the Orange County Fire Authority and the Sheriff's Department for a public annual briefing on how ready Laguna Hills is, and where they see gaps.
  2. Help every household get ready. Promote AlertOC sign-up and evacuation zone maps through City channels, schools, and neighborhood associations, in English, Spanish, and Farsi.
  3. Keep evacuation in mind. Before the City takes away a travel lane or adds stop signs on one of our main roads, I will ask how the change would affect an evacuation, alongside the everyday traffic study.
  4. Check weed abatement for gaps. Ask staff for a yearly report on how many properties were noticed and cleared, and whether any slopes, open-space edges, or common areas fall through the cracks.
